Maximize Your Life

Thomas Cook CFP®, EA | May 3, 2024

Do you want to maximize your wealth or do you really want to maximize your life?

Contrary to the board game LIFE where the richest person at the end wins, my opinion is that you're winning life when you're using your time and money for what is important to you.

A year ago, my wife and I went back to Utah for a friends wedding and to visit family in the area. We had a goal to get my dad out on the slopes with us while we were there.

He used to ski in his younger years, but for the majority of his parenting years he never went due to time and money constraints.

I had heard him talk about a desire to get back on the slopes in the future, but he kept talking about it as if there wouldn't be time or money until retirement.

With a little help from the entire family, we were able to convince him to use a vacation day and join us for a day on the slopes. This is the first picture below.

Fast forward to last week, and I got one of the most rewarding phone calls of my life.

My dad called to thank me. He told me if I hadn't got him on the slopes last year, he still wouldn't be skiing. From that experience, he decided to buy a season pass for this winter.

I got the phone call after his 30th visit this season. That was his goal.

He now sends adorable pictures of him and my mom as seen in the second picture below. They're maximizing life.

Taking a micro action in the right direction gives us new information to guide our next action.

While we do need to prepare for tomorrow, we fail in our efforts if we don't realize today is a gift. Tomorrow is not guaranteed for anybody. If it's not covid, it could be cancer or a car accident.

I hope we all can find joy in the journey.

How do you maximize life and find joy in the journey?
